Artist's Comments

This was a work sculpted for a private commision. The aim was to sculpt the clients likeness onto a garden gnome. So the anantomy is, urm, terrible, but based on that of a general garden gnome. I'll be moulding it up soon and posting up the painted version.

I like it ! :D Must be pretty weird having your own face on a garden gnome tho ... I'd be scared it might come alive at night and try to murder me, lol !

Ha ha ha, that's cool!

BUT, you reckon you're going to get that out of a plaster would? Good luck mate!
Oh, and then a silicone copy? Will the mould not be screwed by then!!!!!

Anyway, what's the guy reckon to it then?
:iconsean-dabbs-fx:
yeah, the plaster mould is gonna be a pain, i dunno how many parts i m gonna have to make it into :S. No i don t need a silicone copy, the plaster mould can be thrown into the bin ounce i have the fibreglass cast. I need silicone for a different project from the same guy, he wants to be made into an action figure and have 20 to 30 copy's of it :P ...

yeah i sent the guy a pic and he really liked it, he wants me to go ahead with the action figure. So i thought of doing the action figure in a similer way to how you made that creature dude that i was asking about.

here is a link to a photo of the guy, he only ever sent me a front and profile view so i found it tough to get things like the depth of the cheek bones right, tell me what you think - [link]

That's not a too bad portrait you've done:) The main characteristics are there. I'd slightly alter his jowels/chin/cheeks slightly, but it is a big improvement over your last. Specially with very limited ref!
The whole area below the eyes into the cheeks is always tough to judge, as there's very little to lock down. I used to lock the eyes in position and work around them, but I think that technique for adding the eyes in last is a way better idea!
At tussauds, they put multiple dots on the face in this and other areas, so from different angles it's easier to get an idea of shape, by where the dots are in the photos.

Good job man:thumbsup:

Hey thanks alot Andy, it means alot coming from you :D i'll pic up on what you've mentioned and try and tighten the piece more. I've had a real tough time with the catwoman for various reasons, and thought i was learning nothing from it. so it was nice to actually start feeling like i m improving. It's not fool proof, but i ve been taking pics of the sculpture and puting it into photoshop, and overlaying on top of the actual photo to see where i need to go. I think i may even start incoroprating the dot technique that you ve mentioned into that. I guess there is no rules to what works and what doesn t

No, the dot thing is done on an actual person. You draw dots in specific places, and take measurements to those dot from the ear or from each other, and this gives you cross reference to get pretty exact. You then translate them to your sculpt.
I don't know what you've got in mind;)

I need to do more faces myself, so that's why i'm quite looking forward to doing at least one this year.
Also why I want to do full figures. Having trouble getting a face exact, try the rest of a person too!
So much going on, if you really scrutinize things.
I've been bored for a long time, but I'm starting to sorta enjoy myself again, which is good:nod:
Just need to really work on the ideas side of things before I go large, so to speak.
:iconsean-dabbs-fx:
thanks :D

so you often dream of murderous garden gnomes then ;) ?

Argh - I try not to. >-<

Woah, just looked at the picture of the guy - not a bad likeness ! Especially since - which Andy already said - you only have 2 reference pics to work from. :)

So that means you'll get more work ! Great job, you deserve it !
